LINUM has been around for over half a century and the company’s history began in a cross-country friendship and a shared vision. During a trip to India in 1966, LINUM founder Sven Kempe met two brothers with clear ambitions for their craft. In long conversations, ideology and values of quality, sustainability and production were twisted together. Over time, the bond and the relationship, as well as cooperation, became lifelong. Even today, LINUM is very close to the producers behind our products and we are very grateful for the togetherness we have.
Nowadays we draw creativity and power from the tablecloth we all once received. We’re talking about that classic fabric made of such high quality, that it can’t be disposed of. Instead, it wanders through generations. The grandmother who gives it to her daughter, who passes it further to her daughter. The linen, napkins and usable placemats or cushion covers in their attractive color ranges. The bedspreads in natural materials or the curtains that have seen several seasons shift, but which are still just as beautiful. The circular and sustainable is found in our desire to create products that can be included from time to time.
In the Swedish nature and our cultural heritage, we pick up color and shape. We draw our own patterns and they are all unique to us. In our values are words such as tactile, Swedish and useful, which fatten and feed our work daily. We create from a predetermined color palette, which returns year after year. In this way, a new product can match one that was manufactured decades ago. Add to that the fact that some of our bestselling pillow cases come in over twenty different shades. In other words, LINUM’s range meets different needs and styles in one home’s many spaces and it is in the human beings biological desire to build a nest, we have our core and our mission.
LINUM and sustainability.
LINUM works mainly with four suppliers in India, focusing on our ranges of UNI, PEPPER and PAOLO. These suppliers have had a long-standing partnership with LINUM, where we share an ideology and values around quality, sustainability and production. LINUM prioritises that both products and collaborations should be sustainable in the long term.
An important part of LINUM’s sustainability efforts includes preventing excess production. By producing sustainable products with timeless designs, we promote long-term use that can be passed down to the next generation. Our goal is for what we produce to be in demand and thus in circulation.
LINUM's main Indian suppliers have certifications in the areas of environment, human rights and human ecology. In order for a supplier to obtain a certification, they must meet requirements designed and established by international and independent third party organisations such as ISO 14001. The requirements are regularly followed up and progressively tightened.
The ISO 14001, Gots or BSCI certifications apply to the environment. For human rights, the providers are certified under SA8000, Gots or BSCI. Within human ecology, there are Oeko-Tex and OCS. LINUM also works with suppliers in Lithuania and Denmark.
In the field of logistics, LINUM operates in cooperation with third parties to ensure the shortest possible transport distance for our products, which are shipped by boat from India and by lorry from Lithuania and Denmark to our warehouse directly adjacent to the port of Gothenburg. For deliveries directly to customers, LINUM also works with third parties in the many countries we sell to. It is up to each freight forwarder to comply with the laws and guidelines in force in the countries in which they operate.
In Sweden, LINUM is a customer of Förpackningsinsamlingen (FTI), which as of January 1, 2024 will go by the name of Näringslivets Producentansvar. We report all packaging we take in and forward in Sweden, broken down into paper and plastic. We report the same statistics to Naturvårdsverket, to whom we pay a fee for LINUM packaging in Sweden. In Germany, this is done through Der Grüne Punkt and the LUCID German Packaging register, in France through Refashion. For 2024, packaging reporting will also take place in Austria and Italy. LINUM strives to use packaging that is equally environmentally friendly as well as reliable for delivery.
