LINUM is pleased to introduce a content theme, exploring how industry professionals interpret our product assortment. We are inspired by others’ eye and feel for our textiles, and don’t believe that we always have to be the originator when it comes to the creative. Which is why we are inviting new faces to share their wealth of ideas.
We have a series of tablecloths that we are really proud of. The pattern, NOUVEAU, is unique to us, and every tablecloth’s colours are applied with the utmost precision. The fabric is linen, which, combined with the genuine handiwork that goes into every tablecloth, makes them worth every penny. NOUVEAU tablecloths are available in three different colourways and three different sizes (170×170 cm, 170×250 cm, 170×330 cm).
Photos by Anna Malmberg, styling by Mari Strenghielm.
We asked the duo Anna Malmberg (photographer) and Mari Strenghielm (stylist) to give their own interpretation of NOUVEAU. The result was an intimate get-together in a beautifully lit orangery, where a simple aperitif or afternoon coffee stands waiting. At the shoot we asked them a few questions.
Tell us a little about how you ended up in creative professions, and what drew you to them?
Mari – As far as can I remember, I have always done something creative. As a student I ended up at several different art schools, and after that I worked as a designer for many years before my interest in image and interiors got the better of me. I have now worked exclusively as an interiors stylist for years. I’m so glad I get to work with something I love; that I get to create new little worlds again and again. It gives me such a kick.
Anna – I grew up with artists as parents, so for me images have always been a natural mode of expression. When I was 14 I discovered a passion for taking photographs, and I decided very quickly that photography was what I wanted to do. The creativity, and the freedom to take my work and passion wherever I might be in the world, are what I love about my job.
What should people consider when styling?
Mari – I almost always start with a mood board, both to find out what I want to create, but also because it’s a good tool for finding out if the customer is on the same page. Finding a common thread is important – that could be a colour or a shape that you can run with. It’s also good to think about who lives here – would they like to have it like this or like that? A human presence is my way of “dotting the ‘i’s”.
What is it that makes a great shot?
Anna – The atmosphere is what I consider to be the most important thing in a shot. That the viewer feels something. Then light, composition and post-processing are obviously very important, too. But an image that is technically perfectly composed isn’t necessarily the best, if it has no feeling.
What is your impression of the NOUVEAU tablecloths?
Mari – The pattern feels like a beautiful old William Morris wallpaper, a classic. So delicate in colour and tone, despite being big on pattern and full of detail. A design you want to match your table settings to!
Anna – The tablecloths feel so summery; it’s as though they’re made for an outdoor table setting.
What is it that makes for a successful summer get-together? What details are important around the table?
Mari – A welcome drink and nibbles as soon as the guests arrive, and then I normally think it’s nice if you serve up food that people can all help out with. Although I like a relaxed and personal vibe, I normally try to do something extra nice with my table settings to make guests feel welcome. A blanket on the back of each guest’s chair is often a welcome touch on a summer evening.
Anna – I think a successful summer get-together should ideally start a little earlier, when the sun still has some heat to it. A long table with a summery tablecloth and vases with fresh meadow flowers, a small mishmash of starters, and drinks with fresh berries and ice cubes. A jumble of different chairs and blankets for a cooler evening. The food should be light and fresh, preferably with some summery tunes in the background, Buena Vista Social Club for example.
