LINUM editorial.

LINUM meets: Ragnar Ómarsson.

Every year, LINUM collaborates with a few hand-picked photographers and stylists, whose assignments are carefully honed over time. With each new season, the specification is refined to reflect our two main collections in the best way possible. In this particular work, it is the eye of photographer Ragnar Ómarsson that is the key to success.
Ragnar Ómarsson has been working with stylist Linnéa Salmén to create this year's images for the PAOLO collection, LINUM's popular velvet series. The products have been photographed with a clear idea of quality and colour in mind, with Linnéa Salmén's careful selection of props contributing to an attractive and eye-catching whole. As part of our autumn campaign on cushion covers, we got the opportunity to have a longer chat with photographer Ragnar Ómarsson.

What is your niche in photography and which clients do you tend to work with the most?

My niche is interiors and lifestyle, but always with a focus on interiors. When I work with models, it is only as a complement to the interior. Alongside LINUM, I also work with clients like HandM HOME, IKEA, ELLOS, BRICMATE, Orrefors and ÅHLÉNS.

What’s it been like to work on LINUM's PAOLO collection?

It’s been great fun. What I have appreciated most about the project is how much freedom Linnéa Salmén and I were given to do our work. Having such a free rein and working with daylight is a great combination.

How would you describe your collaboration with stylist Linnéa Salmén in general?

Linnéa and I have been working together for several years. Our first assignments were for IKEA ,and Linnéa quickly became a favourite stylist. When you’re a photographer, you are very limited if you don't have a good stylist. Linnéa has a strong personal voice and a great eye for images, which makes my work much easier.

What makes a good photo?

It's a balance between composition and light. Taking a nice photo isn’t hard, but creating an interesting, inspiring picture from it is. It takes a little extra effort. Knowing when you're done with the image can be one of the hardest things you do, because when are you really done? When have you finished working on the image? You have to rely on your gut feeling.

How do you think working with photographs has changed over the last five or ten years?

Apart from the fact that technology is constantly evolving, I would say the biggest difference is that we as creators have to produce more material in a day. Social media has changed the game and all customers are thirsty for content, from still images to stop motion and motion pictures. There’s an important balance between quality and quantity in terms of content.

PAOLO is a series for bedrooms. What do you think a bedroom needs to be as comfortable as possible?

In bedrooms, I think it's important not to squeeze in other functions, let it be just a bedroom. No workplace or TV. A calm, harmonious and inviting place where textiles are key. Skip the ceiling light and work with several soft light sources. These combined with a calm harmonious colour scheme create a peaceful, luxurious and sober feeling. Few things are as inviting as a lovely, beautifully made bed. Creating a nice bedroom is well worth the time and effort.
